The heart monitor and watch work fine BUT the display is grainy, small, and hard to see. Far cheaper monitors and watches have far better, brighter, bigger displays.

And – the beeps to warn that you have gone above or below your heart range are so low that there is no way to hear them on the exercise floor! You have to keep the unit to your ear to hear them.

People recommended this so I bought this but I am not happy with this unit.

Have been using the watch for a couple of weeks now, and am really just learning how to use it best for the workouts that I do. I feel like I am just on the tip of the iceburg for what the possibilities are in recording my exercise and reaching my goals. I did order a Small strap and received a Medium strap, but it’s been fine – not worth doing anything about.

The only thing that I have been unable to decide on is whether to use the standard 220 minus your age for your heartrate, or to try the OwnZone. What is difficult for me about having to do a 5 minute warm up before you start your exercise to create your OwnZone for the day is that, as a mom, I am on the run a lot and sometimes am a little late for the spin class and don’t have the 5 minutes needed to determing my OwnZone. So, have been using the 220 minus your age instead…. it is much easier but do intent to discuss with the Polar guy who comes to present/sell at our athletic club.

I have my 520 since November of 2004 and have used it for cycling and mostly running for the last 2 years. It has served me well, except for the water issue that it developed during a run in the rain. Polar Canada warranty contact was none existant, a caution of service from that foreign country Quebec. I have gone through the American site and received an answer back within 48 hours.
I hate to be without it for the time that it will take to repair it, but such is life.

Everything works great. Only slight problem I found is that heart rate monitor isn’t accurate if the chest band is not moist enough in beginning of workout. I just wipe the band with water in beginning to fix that problem.

I’ve used this watch since 2002. The chest strap is comfortable, the indicators are very accurate, and the features are great. After dropping the watch, I broke a button. I called Polar and they sent me a new button within 2 days for free. They have great customer service and really back their products! I have used the watch on my mountain bike in rain, mud, and dust and it’s held up great.

11/24/2008 Update:
Amazingly, this watch is still working perfectly. I have had to send it to an authorized Polar repair shop for new batteries an I recently needed to replace the chest strap. But overall, six years of solid performance was unexpected, especially considering that I use it under water, in snow, heavy rain, mud, dust, etc. I have crashed several times on my mountain bike with this thing and besides a few broken buttons, it keep working. Simply amazing. I hope the current monitors are made just as well.

I really like this polar watch…the only problems that I have had with it is that sometimes it doesn’t keep up with my heartrate. Well, I should say once in a while. Always in the middle of a workout. Usually if I move it around several times it will start to find the correct heart rate. Overall, I am happy with the purchase.
