wonderful product. very accurate mileage. more features than i will ever be able to use. it would be nice if battery life was a little longer but it is understandable that it isn’t.

I got the RS400 to replace the Polar 625X–which failed to connect to my computer just after the warranty expired. key thing about this device is being able to download data to the computer to use the analyzing software. Unfortunatly, I am RETURNING the RS 400 becuase it FAILS TO DOWNOAD to the computer–even using the very expensive POLAR brand IRD interface device. The old watch (625x) was always very touchy to download, took many tries. This fails to transfer at all. I’ve had the Garmin 305 for 2years and love it. It downloads thru a USB connector every time. the only reason I tried to get polar again is to for the OWN INDEX test. But I don’t need to spend $249 for only that functoin when the Garmin 305 does everything else and also has a robust analytical software program (but you cannot print it). really wanted to give Polar another chance and really disappointed. GET THE GARMIN 305 INSTEAD!

Generally the Garmin Forerunner 305 has met my expectations, however, with respect to durability it has been a bit of a letdown. I have had to replace it twice in the last 2 years when it would not startup despite efforts to soft or hard reset it. I use it daily for runs or cycling and enjoy reviewing my exercise data, especially with Garmin’s new Garmin.Connect site.

The unit arrived and my first thought was “this has been repacked”. Usually, electronics have a protective plastic cover over the LCD, this one didn’t.

Then I charged it up and it indicated that it was charging. The next morning, it indicated that it was completely charged. I unplugged it from the charger, tried to turn it on and nothing happened. I’ve tried the published method for resetting it…still nothing. It’s literally a paperweight.

I had timed the arrival with a big mountain bike trip this weekend. I’m very disappointed

I’m going to contact Garmin and Amazon tomorrow to see what to do. I’m fairly certain that a working unit will be great (according to my friends who own them) and a 1 star rating may seem unfair, but they need to take lump for this quality control issue.

I had my Edge 305 for less than a year before it started having problems. The unit just simply powers itself off during high speed descents and rough road patches. I thought this might be due to excessive vibration…so I tried to come up with some different mounts to remedy the problem. The next spring the power issue became overwhelming and I contacted service for repair. To their credit, even though I was about 3 months past warranty, they agreed to cover the repair. I FedEx’d my unit and was told there would be a 10-day turnaround. After 3 weeks I called to find out the status of my RMA…at which point I found out Garmin had LOST my unit. They sent me a refurbished unit. The refurbished unit arrived on a monday. It worked that first day. On Tuesday, the GPS would not acquire any satellites and was worthless. I called Garmin the very next morning and they have agreed to send me a new “in the box” unit. However there will be another 10 day lead time.

I can only add to what others have said about lack of reliability. My unit worked REASONABLY well for a few months, but then started shutting off randomly. This started happening more and more often until it was every couple of minutes. At that point the unit became essentially useless.

It should work better than this in any case, but especially considering the price.

Given what others have said about repeated failures with replacement units, and having to pay shipping costs, I am not highly motivated to try to replace the unit.

So, money lost.
