This Garmin may look a little bulky in the photos, but its durability and features outweigh any extra ounces. The information that the Garmin gives me is priceless in my first-time marathon training. I don’t run too far, wearing myself down unnecessarily and not following my training plan, because of this gadget (I run straight out the front door of my apartment, through my neighborhood.) It is also a great tool for measuring my progress, heart-rate wise. I haven’t gotten into the “Pace buddy” feature yet. I think the only downside is the inability for the Garmin to give alerts for short times and distances for, say, running 400 meters, resting a pre-determined time, then running another 400 meters,etc. (I know this type of training has a name, but I can’t think of it off the top of my head.) I am so pleased with this product. I have been running for eight years and I feel like this Garmin will enable me to take my running to a new committment level. (And it makes my runs exceptionally fun!)

I was really excited to get this product as I was hoping to train for a triathlon and was pumped that it included a bike setting. I had a forerunner 201 before which I loved. However, I really dislike this model and I felt I needed to warn anyone looking to buy this model. The satellite is CRAP. I can run the same route 4 different times and get 4 different distances. The satellite goes out – it doesn’t matter if I am in the city, on a trail, or just main roads in the suburbs. I have found when I have run races and brought my garmin the mileage is WAY OFF – I’m talking 3.7 according to Garmin for a 5.1. Understandably it has a lot of great features, but not worth the price if it can’t do the simple things it advertises. Buyer beware!

I purchased this on the advice of a well respected personal trainer with many years of experience. It is JUST GREAT! The belt that I wasn’t excited about having to wear is very comfortable and even works when I swim. I can come home and load my information onto my computer with little effort and this helps motivate me more than I realized. When I meet my goals for the week I even get a trophy to look at for the entire week that follows.
Be sure you look at the functions and those of the higher end and more expensive models to make sure you choose the one suited for your needs. The computer program has the ability for me to add in distances and modes of exercise even though it idoes not track distance itself. You can even add in your medical information such as BP, HDL and LDL levels, as well as any particular personal information of your own choosing to track with the computer.
